Color basics that save you from “word order pain”

顏色 (yánsè) means “color.” Most color words can behave like nouns (紅色) or describe things with 的.

Two super useful patterns:

Pattern A: 顏色 + 的 + 名詞 → 紅色的外套 (hóngsè de wàitào) “a red coat”

Pattern B: 名詞 + 是 + 顏色 + 的 → 外套是紅色的 (wàitào shì hóngsè de) “the coat is red”

Bonus: 深 (shēn) = darker, 淺 (qiǎn) = lighter, 淡 (dàn) = pale. Add them before the color: 深藍色, 淺綠色, 淡粉色.
