Ready to soften a disagreement without sounding blunt? This short lesson gives you friendly, natural phrases to keep conversations smooth. Have fun — polite pushback is a social skill!

Level B1: In this lesson you'll practice four natural Mandarin softeners for disagreement and alternative ideas. We'll listen to the phrases, hear them in a short conversation, and practice with quizzes and matching. This CEFR-aligned mini-lesson focuses on inviting other views and gently questioning general statements.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Recognize and use polite disagreement frames like 会不会还有别的看法? (Huì bú huì hái yǒu bié de kànfǎ?) and 你说得可能对,不过 ___。 (Nǐ shuō de kěnéng duì, búguò ___.)
  • Practice suggesting alternatives with 你觉得会不会是___? (Nǐ juéde huì bú huì shì ___?)
  • Use 我在想,这是不是不一定总是这样。 (Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng zǒng shì zhèyàng.) to politely question general statements.

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

会不会还有别的看法?

Huì bú huì hái yǒu bié de kànfǎ?

Could there be another way to look at it?

Meaning: Could there be another way to look at it?

When to use: Use this neutral, inviting question when you want to open space for other opinions instead of directly contradicting someone.

在会议上,我们可以说:会不会还有别的看法?

Zài huìyì shàng, wǒmen kěyǐ shuō: Huì bú huì hái yǒu bié de kànfǎ?

At the meeting we can say: Could there be another way to look at it?
他说完后,李老师问:会不会还有别的看法?

Tā shuō wán hòu, Lǐ lǎoshī wèn: Huì bú huì hái yǒu bié de kànfǎ?

After he finished, Teacher Li asked: Could there be another view?

我在想,这是不是不一定总是这样。

Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng zǒng shì zhèyàng.

I wonder if that's always true.

Meaning: I wonder if that's always true.

When to use: Use this polite, indirect frame to question a general claim without sounding confrontational.

Tip: Beginners sometimes omit 我在想 and sound more direct; keep the phrase to stay polite.

我在想,这是不是不一定总是这样,别的情况也可能发生。

Wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng zǒng shì zhèyàng, bié de qíngkuàng yě kěnéng fāshēng.

I wonder if that's always true; other situations can happen.
你说的有道理,但我在想,这是不是不一定总是这样。

Nǐ shuō de yǒu dàolǐ, dàn wǒ zài xiǎng, zhè shì bú shì bù yídìng zǒng shì zhèyàng.

You make a point, but I wonder if that's always the case.

你觉得会不会是___?

Nǐ juéde huì bú huì shì ___?

Don't you think it might be ___?

Meaning: Don't you think it might be ___?

When to use: Use this softened question to suggest a specific alternative or cause without forcing it.

你觉得会不会是时间不够的问题?

Nǐ juéde huì bú huì shì shíjiān bù gòu de wèntí?

Don't you think it might be a problem of not enough time?
你觉得会不会是我们的预算需要调整?

Nǐ juéde huì bú huì shì wǒmen de yùsuàn xūyào tiáozhěng?

Nǐ shuō de kěnéng duì, búguò ___.“,”dialect_or_region”:“Mainland Mandarin”,“localization_status”:“candidate

You may be right, but ___

Meaning: You may be right, but ___.

When to use: Acknowledge the other person's point first, then gently introduce your different opinion or a caveat.

Tip: Don't skip the acknowledgement (你说得可能对); without it the sentence can sound harsher.

你说得可能对,不过我觉得还要看数据。

Nǐ shuō de kěnéng duì, búguò wǒ juéde hái yào kàn shùjù.

You may be right, but I think we still need to look at the data.

You may be right, but changes now are happening too fast.
