Meaning: What do you do for work?

When to use: Use this to ask someone's job in a friendly, neutral way. For extra politeness with older people or strangers say “您做什么工作?”.

Tip: Beginners sometimes say 你做什么? — that can be vague. Use 你做什么工作? to be clear.

When to use: Use this to say your job directly, for example 我是老师 or 我是护士。 You can also say 我做___ for some roles.

Tip: Some learners try to say '我是工作...' which is incorrect. Use 我是 + job title (e.g., 我是老师).

When to use: Use this to name your department or field, such as 我在市场部门工作 or 我在客服部门工作.

When to use: Say this when you are seeking employment. It's natural spoken Chinese in mainland contexts.

Wǒ zuìjìn zài zhǎo gōngzuò, xīwàng xià gè yuè néng kāishǐ xīn zhíwèi.

I'm looking for a job recently; I hope to start a new position next month.
毕业后她一直在找工作,所以去面试很多公司。

Bìyè hòu tā yìzhí zài zhǎo gōngzuò, suǒyǐ qù miànshì hěn duō gōngsī.

After graduating she has been job hunting, so she interviews with many companies.

When to use: Fill the blank with a time (e.g., 九点). Used to say when your workday begins.

Tip: Remember to use a time + 开始上班 (e.g., 我九点开始上班). Avoid missing the time word.

我九点开始上班,通常提前十分钟到公司。

Wǒ jiǔ diǎn kāishǐ shàngbān, tōngcháng tíqián shí fēnzhōng dào gōngsī.

I start work at nine; usually I arrive ten minutes early.

I finish work at 5 pm, then go to the gym.

When to use: Fill the blank with a weekday or date (e.g., 周日, 星期六) to say when you're off.

I rest every Sunday; I want to relax on the weekend.
这个月我在十五号休息,去看医生。

Zhège yuè wǒ zài shíwǔ hào xiūxi, qù kàn yīshēng.

This month I have a day off on the 15th to see the doctor.

Meaning: Can you help me with this task?

When to use: Use this to politely request assistance at work. For more formality say “您能帮我做这个任务吗?”.

你能帮我做这个任务吗?我需要别人的意见。

Nǐ néng bāng wǒ zuò zhège rènwu ma? Wǒ xūyào biérén de yìjiàn.

Can you help me with this task? I need someone else's opinion.
如果时间不方便,也可以说:我可以改天帮忙。

Rúguǒ shíjiān bù fāngbiàn, yě kěyǐ shuō: wǒ kěyǐ gǎitiān bāngmáng.

If the time isn't convenient, you can say: I can help another day.

我在休息

Wǒ zài xiūxi.

I'm on break.

Meaning: I'm on break.

When to use: Use this to say you're currently taking a break at work and may not be available.

对不起,我现在在休息,十分钟后回来。

Duìbuqǐ, wǒ xiànzài zài xiūxi, shí fēnzhōng hòu huílái.

Sorry, I'm on a break now; I'll be back in ten minutes.
休息时间我喜欢散步,所以我会说:我在休息。

Xiūxi shíjiān wǒ xǐhuan sànbù, suǒyǐ wǒ huì shuō: wǒ zài xiūxi.

During breaks I like to walk, so I say: I'm on break.

我做全职工作

Wǒ zuò quánzhí gōngzuò.

I work full-time.

Meaning: I work full-time.

When to use: Use this to state that your job is full-time. Spoken shorter: 我做全职。

我做全职工作,周一到周五通常都在办公室。

Wǒ zuò quánzhí gōngzuò, zhōu yī dào zhōu wǔ tōngcháng dōu zài bàngōngshì.

I work full-time; I'm usually in the office Monday to Friday.
因为孩子现在上学,她决定做全职工作照顾家庭。

Yīnwèi háizi xiànzài shàngxué, tā juédìng zuò quánzhí gōngzuò zhàogù jiātíng.

Because the child is in school, she decided to work full-time to care for the family.

我做兼职

Wǒ zuò jiānzhí.

When to use: Use this to say you have a part-time job. In casual speech: 我做兼职。

Wǒ zài dàxué túshūguǎn zuò jiānzhí, zhōumò yě huì zhíbān.

I do a part-time job at the university library and work shifts on weekends.
他现在做兼职送外卖,晚上比较忙。
