JLPT N2 Vocabulary List for Serious Review

JLPT N2 Vocabulary List is where Japanese study stops being cute and starts being useful. N2 words show up in news, essays, workplace messages, and the kind of polite-but-not-too-polite conversations that Japanese seems to enjoy hiding in plain sight.

If you want a bigger picture of the exam ladder, the Japanese Placement Test JLPT page is a handy place to start, and the main Learn Japanese hub can keep things nicely organized instead of turning your study notes into a small disaster.

This list is built for serious review: common N2 words, clear meanings, and real example sentences. No fluff. Just the vocabulary you keep meeting again and again until you begin to suspect the test is reading your diary.

Quick Nuance Notes

曖昧 means “vague” or “ambiguous,” and it often describes explanations, answers, or plans that are not clear enough. If something is 曖昧, people may politely nod while secretly being confused. Very efficient, not very helpful.

余裕 is a useful word because it can mean spare time, money, mental space, or confidence. 余裕があります can mean “I have time” or “I can handle it,” depending on context. Japanese loves one word doing three jobs.

対策 is often used for practical steps against a problem: heat, pollution, germs, exam stress, you name it. It is one of those N2 words that sounds formal but shows up in everyday life more than you expect.

N2 words are not just “harder words.” They are the words that let you sound informed, calm, and a little more like you belong in the conversation.

Practice: Swap And Say

  • Replace “vague” with 曖昧 in your own sentence.
  • Say one sentence with 余裕 meaning “time,” and one with 余裕 meaning “confidence.”
  • Use 影響する in a sentence about weather, sleep, or work.
  • Use 判断する for a decision you made recently.
  • Use に応じて to show change based on situation.
  • Try 具体的 + noun, such as 具体的な計画.
  • Make one sentence with 徐々に and one with ほぼ.
  • Use 対策 for a problem you are actually trying to solve.

Common Mistakes

  • 曖昧 is not the same as “difficult.” It means unclear.
  • 余裕 is not only “extra money.” It can also mean mental room or time.
  • 影響 is often used as a noun, while 影響する is the verb form.
  • 具体的 should point to something concrete, not just “more details.”
  • 対策 sounds more like a response to a problem than a casual “idea.”
  • 当然 means “of course” or “natural,” but it can sound a bit firm depending on tone.

For N2, the goal is not to memorize every word like a robot with a headache. The goal is to recognize patterns, use the words in real sentences, and keep moving upward. If you can read these words comfortably, the jump to harder material gets a lot less scary. Keep going, and when N1 starts looking suspiciously formal, you will at least know why.
