Plain-English Version

I was sailing across the South Pacific when a bad storm hit our ship.

The wind screamed and waves slammed. The ship broke into pieces.

I jumped into a lifeboat. I was the only survivor.

For days, I floated on the empty sea. I was thirsty and hungry.

Then a ship appeared! The sailors pulled me on board.

There were many caged animals on the deck. A man named Montgomery took care of me.

He seemed kind, but I could tell he was hiding a secret.

When I asked where we were going, he only said, 'To a quiet island.'

We reached the island, and I saw strange faces on the shore.

They looked almost human, but something was off.

'Who are they?' I asked Montgomery.

He didn't answer. He just helped me off the boat.

On the island, I met Doctor Moreau. He was tall and thin, with bright, curious eyes.

'Welcome to my island,' he said. 'You can rest here, but stay away from the big house.'

'Why must I stay away?' I asked.

'I'm doing scientific experiments,' he said. 'They could be dangerous.'

That night, I heard a terrible cry. It sounded like a man in pain.

I ran to Montgomery. 'What was that? Someone is suffering!'

'It's nothing,' he said, but his face was pale.

The next day, I was walking in the forest when I saw a creature.

It was shaped like a man, but its face was like a pig.

I was so scared I couldn't move. The creature looked at me and ran away.

I went straight to Moreau. 'What is happening on this island? You should tell me the truth!'

Moreau smiled. 'I am a scientist. I change animals into humans. It's my life's work.'

I was shocked. 'But they are alive! They can feel! You must stop!'

'You don't understand,' he said. 'I'm close to a great discovery.'

I felt angry and confused. 'This could be a terrible mistake,' I whispered.

Later, I met the Beast Folk. They were creatures that had been animals.

They lived together and repeated a special Law.

One of them looked at me and said, 'Not to walk on all fours; that is the Law. Are we not men?'

Another said, 'Not to eat meat; that is the Law. Are we not men?'

I could see they were trying very hard to be human.

But in their eyes, I saw fear. They were afraid of Moreau.

One day, a leopard man attacked me. I shouted for help and ran.

Montgomery came with a gun and saved me. The leopard man lay dead.

I was shaking. 'This must stop! We should help them, not kill them!'

Moreau was angry. 'They are my creations! I control them!'

But the Beast Folk were starting to forget the Law. They were becoming wild again.

Moreau decided to punish a puma that had broken the rules.

I tried to stop him. 'You could show them kindness instead,' I said.

He didn't listen. The Beast Folk watched, and something in them changed.

A few days later, the Beast Folk started to chase Moreau.

I saw him running. He was very afraid.

There was a fight. Moreau was killed.

The island started to burn. I knew I had to escape.

I ran to the beach and found a small boat.

I pushed it into the sea and climbed in.

I was alone again, but I was alive.

After some days, a ship found me and took me back to England.

But I couldn't forget the island. I saw the faces of the Beast Folk everywhere.

In people's eyes, I sometimes saw fear, like the animals in cages.

I learned that humans and animals are not so different.

I often ask myself, 'What is the Law of being human?'

Perhaps it is just one word: kindness.

Survival Words

The story is full of adventure and danger, so let's start with some key words that help you describe sudden events, feelings and mysteries. These words appear in the tale and are useful for many real-life situations.

Try to picture the scenes from the island as you read the examples - it will make the words easier to remember.

  • storm - a very bad weather event with strong wind and rain Example: A terrible storm destroyed the ship.
  • drift - to move slowly on water or in the air without control Example: I drifted on the sea for days.
  • survive - to continue living after a dangerous event Example: Only one person survived the shipwreck.
  • hide a secret - to keep something hidden from others Example: Montgomery was hiding a secret about the island.
  • creature - a living thing, often an animal or something strange Example: A creature with a face like a pig ran out of the forest.
  • experiment - a scientific test to learn or prove something Example: Doctor Moreau was doing dangerous experiments.
Grammar on the High Seas

This story is a perfect place to practise **past tenses**. Notice how the narrator mixes the *past continuous* (longer background actions) with the *past simple* (shorter, completed actions).

Here is the classic pattern: *was/were + verb-ing* describes something already in progress when a sudden event (*past simple*) happens.

  • 🌊 I was sailing across the ocean when a storm hit our ship.
  • 🛟 I was walking in the forest when I saw a strange creature.
  • ⚡ The Beast Folk were watching when Moreau decided to punish the puma.
Echoes of Fear: Reporting Speech

The characters say many things directly, and you can practise turning their words into **reported speech**. This helps you tell someone else what happened in the past.

When you report speech, you often move the tense back one step (present → past, will → would) and change pronouns. Even at B1, you can start with the most common reporting verbs: *said, asked, whispered, told*.

  • Direct: 'Welcome to my island,' he said. → Reported: He said that I was welcome on his island.
  • Direct: 'What is happening?' I asked. → Reported: I asked what was happening.
  • Direct: 'They are my creations!' Moreau shouted. → Reported: Moreau shouted that they were his creations.
The Law of Kindness: Your Turn

Now you have the words and the grammar to share your own thoughts. The story asks a big question: *What makes us truly human?* Was it the experiments, or was it the fear and kindness the creatures felt?

Use the past tenses you have just practised to retell a part of the story from memory, or imagine a different ending. Try to include two or three of the new words from the Survival Words list.

  • 🤔 If you had met a strange creature on the island, what would you have done?
  • ✍️ Write three sentences about the last time you felt afraid, using past continuous and simple past.
