Ready for a small shock? In this lesson we'll practice quick, natural reactions you can use when news is surprising or impressive. Say them out loud and get the rhythm of how people really respond in Mandarin.
Level A2: This short lesson teaches four common surprise reactions you'll hear in everyday conversations: 太厉害了! (Tài lìhài le!), 等等,什么? (Děng děng, shénme?), ___做了什么? (___ zuò le shénme?), and 真的假的? (Zhēn de jiǎ de?). You'll listen, repeat, and use these phrases in a tiny dialogue — CEFR-aligned and practical for social moments where surprise is the glue.
After this lesson you'll be able to:
Recognize and say four natural surprise phrases used in mainland Mandarin.
Use 等等,什么? (Děng děng, shénme?) to ask someone to repeat surprising details.
React with 太厉害了! (Tài lìhài le!) and 真的假的? (Zhēn de jiǎ de?) appropriately to good or doubtful news.
Form the question ___做了什么? (___ zuò le shénme?) with a name to ask what someone did.
Ready? Let's go!
When you tap play on phrases, we track your progress through this lesson.
1. Reading + Listening Practice
Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.
太厉害了
Tài lìhai le!
That's amazing!
Meaning: That's amazing!
When to use: Use 太厉害了! (Tài lìhài le!) when something impressive or unexpectedly good happens — a big achievement, a clever solution, or someone showing strong skill.
Tip: Some learners overuse 太棒了 or translate word-for-word; 太厉害了 is very natural for impressive achievements.
你会说六种语言?太厉害了!
Nǐ huì shuō liù zhǒng yǔyán? Tài lìhài le!
You can speak six languages? That's amazing!
她一个人完成了整个项目,真是太厉害了!
Tā yí gè rén wánchéng le zhěnggè xiàngmù, zhēnshi tài lìhài le!
She finished the whole project alone — really amazing!
等等,什么
Děngdeng, shénme?
Wait, what?
Meaning: Wait, what?
When to use: Use 等等,什么? (Děng děng, shénme?) when you suddenly didn't catch or understand surprising information and want the speaker to repeat or clarify.
等等,什么?你说谁要辞职?
Děng děng, shénme? Nǐ shuō shéi yào cízhí?
Wait, what? Who did you say is resigning?
电影里他突然消失了——等等,什么?我没听清。
Diànyǐng lǐ tā tūrán xiāoshī le—děng děng, shénme? Wǒ méi tīng qīng.
He vanished in the movie — wait, what? I didn't hear clearly.
___做了什么?
___ zuò le shénme?
___ did what?
Meaning: ___ did what?
When to use: Use a name or pronoun before 做了什么? (zuò le shénme?) to ask what someone did when hearing surprising actions (e.g., 小李做了什么?).
Tip: Don’t forget to put the name or pronoun before 做了什么; saying 做了什么 alone can sound like a fragment.
Tā zuò le shénme? Wǒ gāngcái líkāi le jǐ fēnzhōng, cuòguò le suǒyǒu xìjié.
What did she do? I stepped away for a few minutes and missed the details.
真的假的
Zhēn de jiǎ de?
Seriously?
Meaning: Seriously?
When to use: Use 真的假的? (Zhēn de jiǎ de?) to show mild disbelief after hearing surprising or hard-to-believe information. It's casual and common in mainland Mandarin.
Tip: Beginners sometimes use 真的假的 in very formal situations; use it casually with friends or peers.
他说他中彩票了?真的假的?
Tā shuō tā zhòngcǎipiào le? Zhēn de jiǎ de?
He said he won the lottery? Seriously?
她说要搬去另一个国家工作,真的假的?
Tā shuō yào bān qù lìng yí ge guójiā gōngzuò, zhēn de jiǎ de?
She said she's moving to another country to work — seriously?
2. Conversational Listening Practice
Hear phrases in a real mini-conversation.
Anna tells David surprising news about a colleague.
What surprising event are Anna and David talking about?
Anna
你听说了吗?小王昨天在公司把一个大项目提前交了。
Nǐ tīng shuō le ma? Xiǎo Wáng zuótiān zài gōngsī bǎ yí gè dà xiàngmù tíqián jiāo le.
Did you hear? Xiao Wang turned in a big project early yesterday at work.
David
等等,什么
Děng děng, shénme?
Wait, what?
Anna
对,他一个人完成了所有工作,老板说太厉害了!
Duì, tā yí gè rén wánchéng le suǒyǒu gōngzuò, lǎobǎn shuō Tài lìhài le!
Yes, he finished all the work alone; the boss said 'That's amazing!'
