Welcome to Lesson 6 — quick, friendly, and useful. In this short lesson you'll hear common polite phrases and practice saying them aloud.
Level A1: In this lesson you'll learn six practical politeness phrases: how to make a polite request (请问,我可以___吗?), say thanks for something (谢谢你___。), ask someone to wait (请等一下。), hand something over (给你。), reassure someone (别担心。), and check if a plan is okay (这样可以吗?). CEFR-aligned and focused on real, everyday speech.
After this lesson you'll be able to:
Recognize and say polite request frames like 请问,我可以___吗? (Qǐngwèn, wǒ kěyǐ ___ ma?).
Use 谢谢你___。 (Xièxie nǐ ___.) to thank someone for a specific action.
Ask someone to wait with 请等一下。 (Qǐng děng yíxià.) and hand things over with 给你。 (Gěi nǐ.).
Reassure others with 别担心。 (Bié dānxīn.) and check plans with 这样可以吗? (Zhèyàng kěyǐ ma?).
Practice speaking each phrase aloud to build confidence (A1).

1. Reading + Listening Practice
Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.
请问,我可以___吗?
Qǐngwèn, wǒ kěyǐ ___ ma?
Can I ___, please?
Meaning: Can I ___, please?
When to use: Use this polite question frame when you need permission to do something (the blank is usually a verb or verb phrase).
Tip: Beginners sometimes drop 请问 and sound less polite. Also use 您 instead of 你 with elders/customers if you need extra politeness.
请问,我可以坐这里吗?
Qǐngwèn, wǒ kěyǐ zuò zhèlǐ ma?
Excuse me, may I sit here?
请问,我可以用一下你的手机吗?
Qǐngwèn, wǒ kěyǐ yòng yíxià nǐ de shǒujī ma?
Excuse me, can I use your phone for a moment?
谢谢你___
Xièxie nǐ ___.
Thanks for ___.
Meaning: Thanks for ___.
When to use: Use when you want to thank someone for an action (put a verb phrase in the blank). For a noun, say 谢谢你的 + noun.
Tip: A common error is adding 的 before a verb (e.g., 谢谢你的帮忙) — use 谢谢你的 + noun; use 谢谢你 + verb phrase.

Thanks for helping me take the book.
