English Version

Once upon a time there was a very rich man who had a blue beard. Because of this beard, everyone was afraid of him. But one day, he found a brave young woman and she agreed to marry him.

After the wedding, Bluebeard had to go on a trip. He gave a large set of keys to his wife. He said: "You may open all the doors in the castle, but do not open the little door at the end of the hallway!"

The young woman explored the castle. She opened the first door: a magnificent red room. Next, she opened a blue room full of beautiful furniture. Each room was more beautiful than the last.

But she kept thinking about the forbidden little door. Her friend Anne told her: "Do not open it! It is dangerous!" But curiosity was too strong. She took the little key and opened the door.

The room was very dark. She saw a floor covered with dried blood and... silhouettes of women! She was very frightened. In her fear, she dropped the key onto the blood-stained floor.

She tried to clean the key, but the bloodstain would not come off. Suddenly, Bluebeard returned earlier than expected. He demanded: "Give me back my keys!" His voice was terrible.

When he saw the stain on the little key, his anger was enormous. He shouted: "You shall die!" The poor woman begged: "Let me pray for a moment." She went up to the top of the tower with her sister Anne.

She kept repeating: "Anne, my sister Anne, do you not see anything coming?" Anne answered: "I see two horsemen arriving!" It was their brothers. They entered the castle and saved the young woman.

Bluebeard disappeared forever. The young woman inherited the castle and all his fortune. She lived happily, never again afraid of the color blue.

Words of Mystery and Suspense

This story revolves around a forbidden door and the terrible secret behind it. Let's pick out some key French words that build the atmosphere of mystery and fear.

You'll see these words again and again in thrillers and fairy tales. Learning them actively will help you follow the plot and feel the tension.

  • une clé - a key. The small key (la petite clé) opens the forbidden door.
  • une tache - a stain. The blood stain (la tache de sang) won't wash away.
  • avoir peur - to be afraid. Everyone was afraid of Bluebeard (tout le monde avait peur de lui).
  • un secret - a secret. The secret room hides a shocking truth.
Navigating Past Tenses in a Story

French narratives mix two past tenses: the passé composé (or its literary equivalent, the passé simple) for events that push the plot forward, and the imparfait for background descriptions and ongoing states.

In this story, actions like 'she opened the door' (elle ouvrit la porte) move the story along, while descriptions like 'the room was dark' (la pièce était très sombre) set the scene. Noticing this pattern will boost your reading confidence.

  • Plot actions: 'Il donna un trousseau de clés' (He gave a set of keys), 'Elle laissa tomber la clé' (She dropped the key).
  • Descriptions: 'La pièce était sombre' (The room was dark), 'Il avait une barbe bleue' (He had a blue beard).
Feelings and Reactions in French

The story is full of strong emotions. Notice how the characters express fear, curiosity, and anger. These phrases are useful beyond fairy tales!

You can adapt them to talk about your own feelings. For example, 'J'ai peur' (I'm scared) or 'Je suis curieux/curieuse' (I'm curious).

  • La curiosité était trop forte - Curiosity was too strong.
  • Elle eut très peur - She was very frightened (passé simple of avoir peur).
  • Il cria : « Tu vas mourir ! » - He shouted, 'You are going to die!'
  • Laisse-moi prier un moment - Let me pray for a moment (a plea for time).
