Present Simple Tense in English

Use it to talk about habits, facts, schedules, and “this is just how it is” stuff—without sounding like a robot.

The present simple is the tense you use for regular life: what you do, what’s true, and what usually happens.

It’s also the tense most people mess up in one tiny place: he/she/it + -s. Don’t worry—we’ll tame that yak.

Yak Box: The One-Sentence Rule

Present simple = base verb (work, eat, live)… but add -s for he / she / it (works, eats, lives).

And when you need a helper (negatives/questions), you use do / does.

When To Use The Present Simple

Habits & Routines

Meaning: something you do regularly.

  • I drink coffee every morning.
  • She takes the bus to work.

Facts & General Truths

Meaning: something that’s generally true.

  • Water boils at 100°C.
  • My brother lives in Chicago.

Schedules (Timetables)

Meaning: a fixed plan (train, class, show).

  • The train leaves at 7:10.
  • Our meeting starts at noon.

How To Form The Present Simple

PatternMeaningExample
I/You/We/They + base verbMost subjects use the base verbI work from home.
He/She/It + verb + -s/-esThird-person singular adds -sHe works from home.

Third-Person -S Spelling Rules

Add -S

Meaning: most verbs just add -s.

  • eat → eats (She eats early.)
  • read → reads (He reads a lot.)

Add -ES

Meaning: verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z, -o often add -es.

  • watch → watches (It watches quietly.)
  • go → goes (She goes to class.)

Y → IES

Meaning: consonant + y changes to -ies.

  • study → studies (He studies at night.)
  • try → tries (She tries again.)

But: vowel + y just adds -s: play → plays.
