Linking Words And Connectors In Traditional Chinese(連詞 — Liáncí)

Conversations flow on small bridges: and, but, because, so, if. In Mandarin, these connectors are compact and powerful. Master a handful of patterns—因為…所以…, 雖然…但是…, 如果…就…—and thoughts click together like Lego. This guide focuses on clear, high-frequency linking words in Traditional Chinese, with pinyin after each example and a concise English gloss.

Core Concepts

Linking words in Chinese often appear in fixed pairs or frames. Two-part frames like 因為…所以… and 雖然…但是… set up logic before the main clause lands. Single connectors such as 但是、而且、然後 operate like hinges between sentences. Usage Notes & Common Mistakes

“還是” vs. “或者”
還是 appears in questions; 或者 appears in statements. Mixing them sounds off.
晚餐要吃麵還是飯?(question)
wǎn cān yào chī miàn hái shì fàn
For dinner, noodles or rice?
晚餐吃麵或者飯都可以。(statement)
wǎn cān chī miàn huò zhě fàn dōu kě yǐ
For dinner, noodles or rice is fine.

Overusing 然後
Too many 然後 makes speech choppy. Rotate 接著、再來、最後, or just use commas.

“雖然…但是…” Keep Both Sides
Avoid dropping 但是 in careful writing; in casual speech it’s sometimes omitted, but the full pair reads clearer.

“因為…所以…” In Formal Writing
In very formal prose, one of the pair may be omitted, but everyday speech happily uses both.

不過 vs. 但是
不過 softens the tone; 但是 is more direct. Pick based on how strong the contrast should feel.

不是…而是…
This frame corrects or clarifies. Make part B specific so the correction lands.

Pronunciation Tips

而且 ér qiě:ér is second tone rising; qiě is third tone with a short dip—keep both distinct.
但是 dàn shì:two fourth tones; make two crisp falls, don’t blur into one long drop.
雖然 suī rán:suī is first tone level; rán is second and should rise audibly.
或者 huò zhě vs. 還是 hái shì:huò is fourth tone falling; hái is second rising—this helps keep statement vs. question apart by sound.
於是 yú shì:yú second tone rises, shì fourth tone falls—rise then fall = neat cause→result rhythm.

Practice Plan(Five Honest Minutes)

Read three frames aloud twice each: 因為…所以…;雖然…但是…;如果…就…。
Write two real plans with connectors: 先__,接著__,最後__。
Record a 20-second voice note with one contrast and one result: 不過/但是 + 所以。
Convert a question with 還是 into a statement with 或者 to lock in the difference.

Yak-Style Closing Spark

Connectors are small words with big traffic-control energy. Stack a reason before a result, cushion a “but” when needed, swap 還是/或者 at the right moment, and conversations glide—no road rage, just green lights.
