Spanish Repetir Conjugation
Learn how to use repetir without memorizing a wall of misery: clear patterns, everyday examples, and the forms you will actually hear.
The first time I heard ¿Puedes repetir? in a noisy café, I smiled and nodded like I totally had this. I did not have this. That tiny verb, repetir, turns up everywhere: when someone says something too fast, when you do something again, when a student repeats a class, and even when somebody goes back for seconds. Overachiever behavior, honestly.
The good news: repetir looks scarier than it is. Once you learn where the e changes to i and where it does not, the whole verb starts behaving much better.
The Tiny Rule That Makes Repetir Click
Repetir is an e → i stem-changing -ir verb. In many present-based forms, the second e changes to i: repito, repites, repite. In the nosotros and vosotros forms of the present, that change usually disappears: repetimos, repetís.
In the preterite, the stem change shows up only in the third-person forms: repitió and repitieron. The gerund also changes: repitiendo. The past participle is regular: repetido. Nice of Spanish to give you one polite form before causing more drama elsewhere.
Memory trick: when the stress hits the stem, repetir often flips e → i. No stress on the stem? The verb usually calms down.

Preterite: The Sneaky Third-Person Change
Use the preterite for a finished action in the past. Here is the part learners forget and then pretend they never saw: with stem-changing -ir verbs like repetir, the change appears only in the third-person singular and plural.
| Pronoun | Conjugation | English Meaning | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| yo | repetí | I repeated | Repetí la respuesta una vez. = I repeated the answer once. |

Imperfect, Future, And Conditional
These three are much calmer. The imperfect is regular, and the future and conditional keep the full infinitive repetir-.
| Tense | Key Form | English Meaning | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Imperfect | repetía | was repeating / used to repeat | Cuando era niño, repetía todo lo que decía mi hermano. = When I was a kid, I repeated everything my brother said. |

| Conditional | repetiría | I would repeat | Yo no repetiría esa historia en una entrevista. = I wouldn’t repeat that story in an interview. |
Useful full forms you will hear a lot: repetíamos (we used to repeat), repetirás (you will repeat), repetirían (they would repeat).
Present Subjunctive And Commands
The present subjunctive comes from the yo form: repito → repita, repitas, repita, repitamos, repitan. You will use it after expressions of desire, doubt, emotion, and polite requests.
| Form | English Meaning | Example Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| que yo repita | that I repeat | El profesor quiere que yo repita la frase. = The teacher wants me to repeat the sentence. |

Commands are where repetir becomes very practical very fast.

| no repitas (tú) | don’t repeat! | No repitas ese chisme. = Don’t repeat that gossip. |

| repitiendo | repeating | Está repitiendo la misma historia. = He’s repeating the same story. |

Final Yak
If you remember just four things, make them these: repito in the present, repitió and repitieron in the preterite, repita for the subjunctive and formal command, and repitiendo for the gerund. Everything else starts falling into place once those stop looking scary.
Repetir is one of those verbs that looks irregular until you notice the pattern. Then it becomes weirdly satisfying. Not fun exactly. Let’s not get carried away. But satisfying.
