Ready to find your way around a Chinese city? This short lesson lets you hear common direction phrases, practice them with quick quizzes, and say them out loud. Let's yak about directions so you won't get lost!

Level A1: In this lesson you'll learn and practice eight everyday direction phrases used in China (for example, 往前走 (Wǎng qián zǒu) — "Go forward."). This CEFR-aligned lesson focuses on giving and following simple directions: going straight, turning left/right, crossing the road, asking if a place is far, and more. You'll listen, answer quick quizzes, and speak each phrase aloud.

After this lesson you'll be able to:

  • Recognize and say eight common direction phrases (A1).
  • Understand short directions on the street and follow basic navigation instructions.
  • Ask and answer simple distance/time questions like 离这儿远吗? (Lí zhèr yuǎn ma?) and 走路要多久? (Zǒulù yào duōjiǔ?).

1. Reading + Listening Practice

Hear core phrases, repeat aloud.

往前走

Wǎng qián zǒu.

Go forward.

Meaning: Go forward.

When to use: Use this short command when you want someone to move forward a bit or continue in the forward direction.

Tip: Beginners sometimes say 向前走 (xiàng qián zǒu) — that's also okay, but 往前走 is more colloquial in spoken directions.

请你往前走一点,站到门口那儿。

Qǐng nǐ wǎng qián zǒu yīdiǎn, zhàn dào ménkǒu nà'er.

Please go forward a bit and stand near the doorway.
看到红绿灯就往前走,不要停。

When you see the traffic light, go forward — don't stop.

往左拐

Wǎng zuǒ guǎi.

Turn left.

Meaning: Turn left.

When to use: Give this quick instruction when the person should turn left at an intersection or corner.

到了咖啡店门口往左拐,商场就在右手边。

Dào le kāfēidiàn ménkǒu wǎng zuǒ guǎi, shāngchǎng jiù zài yòushǒubiān.

Turn left at the coffee shop entrance; the mall will be on the right.
请在第二个路口往左拐,不要过马路。

Qǐng zài dì èr gè lùkǒu wǎng zuǒ guǎi, bú yào guò mǎlù.

Turn right.

Meaning: Turn right.

When to use: Tell someone to turn right at a corner, next street, or intersection.

Don't go straight; when you get to the intersection turn right.

一直走

Yìzhí zǒu.

Go straight.

Meaning: Go straight.

When to use: Use this when you want someone to continue straight ahead along the road without turning.

Tip: Learners sometimes use 往前走 interchangeably; 一直走 emphasizes continuing straight for a distance.

Cóng zhèlǐ yìzhí zǒu, kàn dào gōngyuán jiù zài zuǒbiān.

Go straight from here; you'll see the park on the left.

Cross the road.

Meaning: Cross the road.

When to use: Tell someone to go across the street (use at crosswalks or when instructed to reach the opposite side).

After crossing the road and going forward you'll be at the school gate.

到路口再拐

Dào lùkǒu zài guǎi.

Turn when you get to the intersection.

Meaning: Turn when you get to the intersection.

When to use: Use this when you want someone to wait until they reach the intersection and then turn (direction implied elsewhere).
