Learn how to talk about colors in simplified Chinese: 颜色 yánsè. Because pointing at a thing and saying “that… colorful one” gets old fast.

Colors are some of the first useful words in Chinese because they pop up everywhere: clothes, food, traffic lights, weather, makeup, home decor, even tea. Once you know the basic pattern, you can describe a lot more than just a red shirt.

The main word for color is 颜色 yánsè, “color.” Many basic color words are used as color + 色 sè, like 红色 hóngsè, “red,” or 蓝色 lánsè, “blue.” In casual speech, native speakers sometimes drop 色 sè when the meaning is obvious, but beginners are usually safer keeping it.

Common Confusion That Is Worth Knowing

蓝色 lánsè usually covers blue, while 绿色 lǜsè is green. Easy enough.

粉色 fěnsè is pink. You may also hear 粉红色 fěnhóngsè, “pink,” especially when someone wants to be extra specific.

橙色 chéngsè is orange, but in real speech some people also say 橘色 júsè. Same family, no need to panic.
