Toys In Japanese
Japanese for toys: おもちゃ(玩具, omocha / gangu) — from plushies and model kits to gacha and classic Japanese toys.
I have a working theory that toy shops are one of the fastest ways to lose all self-control in Japan. You walk in for “just a quick look,” and suddenly you are emotionally invested in a tiny capsule toy, a suspiciously elegant spinning top, and one plush cat that absolutely did not need to come home with you. Adults do this too. Especially adults.
That is exactly why learning toy words in Japanese is weirdly practical. Maybe you are buying a gift, wandering through a department store, hovering near the gacha machines like a raccoon with a coin, or trying to explain your model-kit habit with dignity. Most toy vocab lists stop embarrassingly early. This one does not.
Quick Reality Check: おもちゃ(omocha) is the everyday word for “toy,” but adults often get more specific fast: フィギュア(figyua), プラモデル(puramoderu), カプセルトイ(kapuseru toi), and so on. Vague is fine. Specific is better.

Curious Bit That Saves You From Sounding Vague
- おもちゃ(omocha) is the normal everyday word for “toy.” It is usually written in kana, not kanji, in daily life.
- 玩具(gangu) is more formal. You may see it in dictionaries, labels, product copy, or slightly stiffer writing. Very correct. Slightly less chatty.
- 人形(ningyō) means dolls. ぬいぐるみ(nuigurumi) means plush or stuffed toys. These are not the same thing, and yes, Japanese is judging your shelf accuracy.
- ガチャ(gacha) is the casual everyday word. カプセルトイ(kapuseru toi) is the tidy, neutral term for the toy itself.
- In hobby talk, people often skip the broad word おもちゃ and go straight to the specific item: フィギュア, プラモデル, けん玉, and so on.
